Tools and materials
You need the following materials in order to make the coal wagon fully functional. Suggestions are provided where you can acquire these, but they should be generally available. If the battery cradle is too much hasstle for you to build you can try and find one commercially available which fits into the cradle slot in the wagon. I would still suggest you follow my tutorials and make one. Make it a challenge :)
If you have never worked with soldering, there are great videos on YouTube to show you the basics. That should be just enough to acquire a skill to get this done.
There are also dedicated videos with each Loligrad build so you should be covered.
- OPTION 1 - Battery contacts - If you choose to build the native battery cradle (which I hope you do), you will need AA battery contacts which you can insert into the cradle. You can get some on AliExpress. When you get the coal wagon with the locomotive purchase, a video will be available in the instructions where you can see the exact contacts I used.
- OPTION 2 - Battery holder - If you do not want to make one from this set, you can buy a prebuilt one. Look on AliExpress for one which can fit and holds batteries in a 2rows x 2batteries.
- Magnets 6mmx3mm 4pcs - You will need these to make connectors. Wagons need 4. They are pretty cheap, especially if you buy in bulk. Check out on AliExpress.
- Flat cable - You will need this for wiring the vehicles. Try to look for old used IDE flat cables. I have tons of them in my PC scraps. If you do not have any ask your friends or search on the internet for "used IDE flat cable". Worst case scenario, you can buy cheap ones from AliExpress. We do not need to much wire from a flat cable, so one IDE flat cable will provide wiring for a lot of wagons and locomotives.
- Super glue
- OPTIONAL - Double sided sticky tape - You will need this to stick the wheel carriage to the bottom of the wagon. That way it is removable and replaceable.
Aside from usual tools used for 3D printing, here is a list of additional tools you will require to make the wagon:
- Soldering iron - I would recommend 30W or less. Anything over 30W might burn your components. Also awoid bying cheap ones. It is not that expensive anyway and I would recommend my childhood favourite Weller. Take a look on Amazon.
- Solder wire - a little bit of soldering wire is necessary. I would recommend lead-free flux-core (rozin-core) solder wire. You do not need a large quantity. Any small spool will do. If you know someone who works with electronics you can ask for a little bit because you do not need much. If not, you can check out on Amazon. I wouldn't recommend buying from AliExpress in this case.
- OPTIONAL - Thin tweezers - makes life easier when assembling connectors.
- OPTIONAL - Wire stripper - This will make connector assembly significantly easier. I suggest you get a cheap clamping one from AliExpress.
